By making a few lifestyle changes, you can significantly improve your chance of conception and give your baby the best head start possible.

At PMRC, we can help implement some of those important lifestyle changes including dietary advice, helping you achieve a healthy weight and create an exercise program tailored specifically to meet your needs and most importantly, one that you will enjoy.

Getting in shape six to twelve months before you conceive enables you to safely start a weight loss programme, make it easier for you to maintain an active lifestyle during pregnancy, help you to get through labour and make you less vulnerable to the hormonal shifts that can make pregnant women angry and irritable and send family and friends running for cover.

An example of an exercise programme for weight loss includes exercise that gets your heart pumping (cardiovascular exercise), strengthening exercise to increase muscle tone and flexibility exercises to keep you muscles supple. The added benefit to getting in shape and loosing weight is your muscles will be prepared for the hard work of labour and delivery -- without causing undue physical stress for you or your baby.

The Exercise Physiologists at PMRC are university trained health professionals who specialise in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and physiology. We will devise a weight loss programme which includes:

  • Giving clients choice of actions, making exercise enjoyable.
  • Set realistic goals.
  • Educate on techniques for initiating weight loss.
  • Provide strategies for long term weight loss - education.
  • Coaching to increase level of competence.
  • Explore their individual QOL, medical goals and balance in life including time management.
  • Give rewards/encouragement/positive feedback.
