Psychological Services - Employee Assistance Programs

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) assists employees who have developed personal problems that are interfering with their job performance. The program is also available to the employee's immediate family as personal problems tend to begin and affect those at home as well.

The EAP enables employees to obtain effective and timely counselling for a wide variety of problems, for example:

  • workplace harassment and discrimination
  • work related and post-traumatic stress
  • lack of assertiveness and confidence,
  • health concerns,
  • gambling problems,
  • interpersonal conflict,
  • family and marital problems
  • coping with life events (divorce, separation, death, or trauma),
  • alcohol and drug related problems

Benefits of an EAP

Encouraged use of an EAP facilitates communication between management, supervisors, and staff, over issues such as work performance, management or employee practices. It also helps staff to deal quickly and productively with stressful workplaces or traumatic/unusual incidents at work.
The EAP benefits organisations in several ways, for example:

  • maintaining work quality
  • increasing safety
  • reducing absenteeism
  • enhancing morale, and
  • retaining staff
