Psychological Services - Pain Management Programs

Cognitive and behaviourally based approaches include several ways to help patients understand more about their pain and take an active part in its assessment and control. The goals are to change patients’ perceptions of pain, alter pain behaviour and provide patients with a greater sense of control over their pain.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy, when conducted according to clearly established protocols, is the only psychological intervention that has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of chronic pain. It is delivered through a clear programme of defined length that works towards clearly defined outcomes.
